چکیده

This paper describes the development of a microbial fuel cell (MFC) for electricity production from cellulose that is based on mixed culture of rumen bacteria in vitro. The fibrolytic bacteria isolated from rumen fluid were used in anode compartment of MFC, which can release glucose up to 15 g/L from carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). At the same time, the maximum power density of 100.60mWm was generated when using copper sulfate as the cathodic electron acceptor. But the output voltage and current quickly fell down to 0.12 V and 0 mA after 48 h for electrode corroded and toxicity. When using methanogens isolated from the same rumen fluid instead of copper sulfate, the maximum power density about 3090 mWm was recovered. This study demonstrates that symbiotic microorganisms could be used as catalysts and mediators effectively in the cathode for a MFC. CMC concentrations were further found to be the major factor on the output voltage and Coulombic efficiencies.

Electricity production from cellulose in a microbial fuel cell using a defined binary culture.

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) convert biodegradable materials into electricity, potentially contributing to an array of renewable energy production strategies tailored for specific applications. Since there are no known microorganisms that can both metabolize cellulose and transfer electrons to solid extracellular substrates, the conversion of cellulosic biomass to electricity requires a syntroph...

Enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose coupled with electricity generation in a microbial fuel cell.

Electricity can be directly generated by bacteria in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) from a variety of biodegradable substrates, including cellulose. Particulate materials have not been extensively examined for power generation in MFCs, but in general power densities are lower than those produced with soluble substrates under similar conditions likely as a result of slow hydrolysis rates of the par...

Electricity generation and microbial community analysis of alcohol powered microbial fuel cells.

Two different microbial fuel cell (MFC) configurations were investigated for electricity production from ethanol and methanol: a two-chambered, aqueous-cathode MFC; and a single-chamber direct-air cathode MFC. Electricity was generated in the two-chamber system at a maximum power density typical of this system (40+/-2 mW/m2) and a Coulombic efficiency (CE) ranging from 42% to 61% using ethanol....
